The hardest part of fixing a roof leak is often finding the leak. Because water can find its way through the smallest opening, finding a leak is not always obvious. When this happens, I have to do a water test.
What is a water test?
I grab a long hose and start running water at the lowest roof section, near the wet ceiling spot. Then I call the homeowner and say, "Hey, can you see any water leaking?" If they say yes, I found the spot! Otherwise, I run the water a bit higher on the roof and ask again. It's a lot like playing Marco-Polo.

Another challenge of fixing a roof is finding a similar shingle. I had to go to three places to find the 3-tab brown shingle! The homeowner said I could just put whatever. However, a gray patch on a brown roof would have looked so ugly. Shout out to S J Williams in Wilmington for keeping a 3-tab brown shingle in stock.
